Invisible from the street, the building reveals itself only once entered, shifting the experience from public anonymity to private discovery. Originally conceived as a large storage facility, the structure has been radically reimagined as a hidden villa—an introverted yet richly layered domestic landscape. Around this core, four studio units with mezzanines are carefully integrated, alongside a master bedroom, office spaces, a cinema room, and play areas, balancing collective life with moments of retreat. A defining feature of the project is its system of pocket gardens. These outdoor rooms are interwoven throughout the architecture, dissolving boundaries between interior and exterior while allowing landscape to penetrate deep into the building. Each garden offers a distinct atmosphere, collectively wrapping and connecting the house into a continuous green experience. The largest pocket garden opens directly from the living space, becoming the heart of the home. Here, an outdoor pool extends domestic life beyond the walls, seamlessly connected to an interior wellness zone comprising a sauna and gym. The entire roof surface is covered with photovoltaic panels, forming one of the largest residential solar installations in Rotterdam. This expansive solar canopy transforms the roof into an active energy-producing landscape, significantly reducing the building’s environmental footprint while reinforcing its autonomous and future-oriented character. Le Corbusier’s Modulor aimed to enable effective industrial mass production of architecture by unifying three factors in the architectural module: human scale, the visual harmony of the Golden section, and the imperial/metric measurements based on the Fibonacci series. Izumi Kuroishi’s work, “Mathematics for/from Society: The Role of the Module,” highlights the diversity of module dimensions in Japanese architecture. Many modules differed from the standard dimension of 910 mm of the Kanto module, conventional on the east side of Japan. Examples include the 800 mm (Sekisui Heim M1) module, the 960 mm (Matsushita Type-One) module, and the 1260 mm (Daiwa House Type-A) module. These dimensions were later changed to approximately 910 mm due to issues such as building materials and narrow sites. For instance, the Sekisui Heim M1 model (1970) adopted the 800 mm module (2400 mm by 5600 mm), while the Sekisui Heim M3 model (1975) changed its internal dimension to the 900 mm module used for 8 Tatami rooms. The Matsushita Type-One 960 mm module was influenced by the Kansai module, conventional on the west side of Japan. Furthermore, the National House Industrial Company changed its module from 960 mm to 900 mm in their “R2N - 900” module type (1972), responding to the housing needs for narrow sites in Tokyo. The Daiwa House Type-A model adapted the 1260 mm module because general distributed building materials of 4-shaku by 8-shaku (1 shaku = 30.3 cm) are common in that module. Reducing the amount of steel in the wider spans reduces costs; 3 modules, which represent 3780 mm, equal 12-shaku (two-Ken), consistent with the dimensions of Tatami rooms common to Japanese houses. The Daiwa House Type-B (1967) model changed to the 940 mm module to fit the small size of sites. This 940 mm module equals half the length of two 910 mm panels plus one 60 mm width connector. In contrast, Western construction (modernism) typically uses modules of 60/60 cm or 90/90 cm. A raised floor, built higher than the ground, can capture winds of higher velocity. The use of “gaps” (regulated openings) on the floor can introduce air into the interior space. The implementation of a cross-ventilation system will facilitate air flow across the space. The stack ventilation system ​(chimney effect) or Bernoulli’s Principle could both be utilized. The stack ventilation system leverages temperature differences to move air. Hot air rises due to its low-pressure characteristics. Bernoulli’s Principle, on the other hand, uses wind speed differences to move air, so it can also be categorized under wind-driven ventilation. It is a fundamental principle of fluid dynamics that the faster air moves, the lower its pressure. Outside air that is further away from the ground is less obstructed, so it moves faster than air closer to the ground. Consequently, the higher air has lower pressure. This lower pressure can help “suck” fresh air through the building. Stack ventilation and the Bernoulli effect can be combined with cross-ventilation, taking advantage of multiple horizontal and vertical air pathways to achieve maximum indoor air quality and thermal comfort. Solar chimneys are also an option if there is direct sun exposure. In such a manner, the proposed structure reinterprets the attributes of the guest house by the use of successive architectural elements as part of a wine-cultivation context. Aiming to be a focal point to promote wine-tasting tours and experiences of the Tili Vini organic products. The Tili Vini wine-producing work philosophy follows deep respect for the preservation of soils, and the ecosystem of cultivation that further define and underline the construction building method of the complex that evolves around sustainability and environmental consciousness from design up to construction and building operation. Raw building materials such as brick(potentially recycled), stone, wood, and clay are chosen and sourced locally to minimize as much as possible pollutive building footprint. Integration of the existing grey-bricked structure within the design framework is considered a valuable pivotal counterbalance of the exterior courtyard while both revolve around the common notion of a gathering place. Center points for all guests to meet indoors and/or outdoors and enjoy the vineyard’s products. With views over the mountains, and the valley, surrounded by plots of bucolic landscape and the vineyards, the proposal as a visual filter seamlessly is integrated into the natural landscape of Assisi valley. The configuration explores and conveys the concept of patios combined with a courtyard where the interior and exterior blend together and connect with nature. The boundaries between external and internal areas through specific framing views configuration develop inclusion which explores interaction with surrounding qualities. we came across many Dutch traditional and not housing of various typologies that required transformation to accommodate the current needs of their new or older owners. We find that process important from the point of how society changes simultaneously with its needs regarding spatial occupation and comfort. Furthermore, how this is reflected, in a remarkably refined and without any obstruction way we live.. where we live. Some of the projects we will present are important for Dutch housing history. The preservation of the distinguished character of Dutch housing combined with the fast-transforming society makes those projects unique to us. How the lifestyle is shaping and re-shaping the interior environment. Housing transformations are the result of major demographic, and socio-economic changes, in addition to technological advancements, and socio-political interventions. We are examining firsthand how the built environment derives from a variety of influences: structural, institutional, textual, and action-orientated. When we work on a transformation we start with the history, research for the space we are transforming, and owners' input, how they envision their space, their routine, and lives. come up with new designs for the Netherlands. With this, the Ministry of Create wants to contribute to the radical renovation of the Netherlands and offer concrete solutions for the housing shortage, the energy transition and the consequences of climate change.&nbsp;Moreover, the Ministry of Make encourages reflection on the way in which the existing government structures deal with this."As a community, we are faced with a number of major transformations; these tasks all have a spatial impact. The Netherlands not only has a tradition of coping with such complex tasks, but also a contemporary architectural discipline and the design power to make an inspiring contribution to the urgencies of today." , say the initiators of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR), MANN and ZUS, together with VOLUME and the Independent School for the City. 1 million extra climate-proof homes The Ministry's main objective is to bring together solutions for various social challenges in a spatial approach, such as the consequences of climate change, subsidence, sea level rise, the nitrogen problem and the energy transition. In concrete terms, the Ministry wants to work responsibly on the housing task of 1 million additional climate-proof homes.&nbsp;It is also important to find solutions for conflicting regulations and the need for alternative forms of cohabitation and financing. National plan map completed with local design power The ministry has issued a concrete assignment for 100 designers with the request to conduct research into the development of 10,000 climate-proof homes within their area and to make a design for this. The designers and specialists receive a Test Kit containing everything they need. They also consult with the team of any adjacent area. Each design team makes concrete proposals to create a spatial whole of the Netherlands.&nbsp;With the initiative, the Ministry of MAAK is applying an approach that is national, but also local, based on the specific situation of 100 concrete 'Test Locations'.&nbsp;It is a national planning map as it also existed before, but now filled in with local design power.“10.000 homes x 100 locations = 100 Architectural offices accross Netherlands Location - BUGGENUM, LIMBURG Buggenum is a parish village in the Dutch province of Limburg. The village lies on the left bank of the river Maas, as the crow flies about five kilometres north of Roermond and has around a thousand inhabitants. Before 2007, it belonged to the former municipality of Haelen, but is now part of the municipality of Leudal. Buggenum was an independent municipality until 1942. From a landscape perspective Buggenum lies along the Maas, at an altitude of about 20 metres. Water canals are connecting the town to its former power plants, as well as a harbour. Until 1947, Buggenum was connected via a ferry Roermond. The course of the Maas was radically altered by cutting off riverbanks and by gravel extraction, creating a series of extensive ponds and small water bodies. To the northeast of Buggenum one finds the Bouxweerd nature reserve. The Buggenumse Veld to the west of this is a preserved open agricultural area. <img width="700" height="504" width_o="700" height_o="504" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6cb1226a8061486c15287f87c1b387f6af01a03e069ce8a2b5763f14448f048d/timeline.gif" data-mid="158591319" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/700/i/6cb1226a8061486c15287f87c1b387f6af01a03e069ce8a2b5763f14448f048d/timeline.gif" /> Intro Our first impression right at the beginning is that it is an area of extremely landscape importance.&nbsp; Landscape played an important role in our decision-making process.&nbsp; A first challenge came in a form of a research question directly out of the brief on “How to fit 10k extra housing units?” However, coupled this with the fact that Buggenum is surrounded by areas ecological value limited our scope of intervention substantially. &nbsp; Strategy/Objective As a result, we defined 4 guiding principles /goals that we tried to maintain throughout the design process: Preserve as much as possible the landscape and its qualities (Bouxweerd and Buggenumse Veld) Protect housing and new developments from water rise (water safety strategy) Utilize existing infrastructure and provide ample accessibility option for the inhabitants. That were Buggenummerbroek a currently natural area with the potential in the future to facilitate recreation activities (bike running etc). At the same time given the nature of the west part and its use as former industrial site we decide not to intervene but to restore it in a ecological original status. Action 2: Reroute and reinforce the existing dike. We had look at the city plans of the proposed dike but given the fact of densification we had to reassess the course so to expand the development area up until the banks of the river.&nbsp; Additionally, we prolonged it underneath the rail line creating a protective barrier allowing housing to be located. Action 3: Create a green buffer around Buggenum to protect the original town from further densification but also establishing an essential interaction zone between new and old where most amenities and recreational facilities are taking place. Action 4: Reprofiling and strengthening existing axis towards the north. The existing polderstructure and street network worked as a helpful underlay for us to define the future street pattern. At the same time, we saw an opportunity of a potential relationship with the nearby villages of Hannsum and Neer. Action 5: Connect all the main streets thought a ring road that further continues to the south underneath the rail line. On the intersection of those two (ring and parallel streets) we find small centers that could accommodate all the retail and commercial requirements of the future inhabitants. Action 6: Damping and careful land reclamation on specific areas. More specifically along the opposite riverbank we placed the remaining development so that on one hand to activate both sides of the river and secondly to create a steppingstone between Haelen on the (west) Buggenum and further to Roermond.&nbsp; At the same time reprofiling Holstraat (an existing and historic street that cuts though Buggenum) into a main artery connecting both riverbanks developments. &nbsp; Conclusion We can conclude that the additional 10.000 housing units proved more challenging than we initially thought. Nonetheless seeing this assignment more as a test/case study and less as a design competition we can safely say that within our given area a total of 6-7k housing could be an ideal amount to satisfy our main goals.
